ลักษณะทางพฤษศาสตร์ (Botanical characteristics)

วัชพืชประเภทใบกว้าง อายุฤดูเดียว ลำต้นอาจสูงได้ถึง 1.5 เมตร ใบเดี่ยว เรียงสลับ ปลายใบแหลม โคนใบรูปหัวใจตื้นๆ หรือกลม ขอบใบจักซี่ฟันไม่เป็นระเบียบ แผ่นใบมีขนสากทั้งสองด้าน ก้านใบยาว ช่อดอกแบบช่อกระจุกแน่น เรียงบนแกนเดียว ดอกจำนวนมาก มีเพศเดียว ช่อดอกเพศผู้ออกที่ปลายกิ่ง มีลักษณะเป็นตุ่มกลม เมื่อบานแล้วเปลี่ยนเป็นสีน้ำตาล และหลุดร่วมไป ดอกเพศเมียอยู่ชิดกันเป็นคู่ๆ ในกระเปาะกลมรี ทางตอนล่างของช่อ เปลือกมีหนามปลายงอเป็นขอ ที่ปลายกระเปาะมีหนามแข็ง 2 อันโค้งงอเข้าหากัน แต่ละกระเปาะมี 2 ผล ผลละ 1 เมล็ด ผลเมื่อแก่เปลี่ยนเป็นสีน้ำตาลเข้ม ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยเมล็ด

พบขึ้นทั่วไปตามที่โล่ง ดินระบายน้ำดี เป็นวัชพืชในนาข้าวหลังเก็บเกี่ยว บางครั้งจึงพบในแปลงพืชที่ปลูกหลังเก็บเกี่ยวด้วย

ควบคุมโดยวิธีกล กระชับเป็นพืชฤดูเดียว มีผล 500 – 5400 ผล/ต้น แต่ละผลมี 2 เมล็ด เมื่อผลแก่จะแห้งติดต้น ต้นแห้ง ยืนต้นตาย เมล็ดมีการพักตัว มีชีวิตในดิน 2-3 ปี จึงไม่ควรไถกลบลงไปในดิน ควรเก็บต้นพร้อมผลออก และถอนต้นที่งอกใหม่ออกก่อนที่จะออกดอก ทำซ้ำกัน 2-3 ปี ก็สามารถกำจัดกระชับออกไปได้
