ลักษณะทางพฤษศาสตร์ (Botanical characteristics)

วัชพืชประเภทใบกว้าง เป็นพืชใบเลี้ยงคู่ ที่ขึ้นได้ทั้งบนบกที่ชุ่มชื้นและในน้ำ (สะเทิ้นน้ำสะเทิ้นบก) อายุหลายปี ลำต้นตั้งตรงหรือเลื้อยทอดไปตามพื้นดิน ปลายยอดชูตั้ง สูงประมาณ 30 เซนติเมตร ภายในกลวง มีขนอ่อนปกคลุม ลำต้นมีสีเขียวออกม่วงแดง มีข้อปล้องชัดเจน มักมีรากออกตามข้อที่อยู่ใกล้ดิน ใบเป็นใบเดี่ยว แผ่นใบรูปไข่กลับ ฐานใบเรียวเล็ก ออกตรงข้ามกัน ขอบใบเรียบ ผิวใบมีขนโดยเฉพาะใบอ่อน ก้านใบสั้น หรือเกือบไม่มี ดอกออกเป็นช่อแบบกระจุกกลม ตรงซอกใบ ไม่มีก้านช่อดอก ดอกย่อยมีขนาดเล็ก เป็นดอกสมบูรณ์เพศ ส่วนของดอกประกอบด้วย กลีบรวม จำนวน 5 กลีบ รังไข่อยู่ต่ำกว่าส่วนของดอก ผลเป็นผลเดี่ยว ขนาดเล็ก รูปรjางคล้ายรูปไต แห้งแก่แล้วแตกเป็น 2 ซีก แต่ละซีกมีเพียง 1 เมล็ด ขนาดเล็ก เมล็ดสีน้ำตาลดำ ขยายพันธุ์ด้วยเมล็ดและส่วนของลำต้น ผักเป็ดไทย เป็นวัชพืชที่พบในเขตร้อนทั่วโลก ภายใต้ร่มเงา หรือดินที่ชุ่มชื้นในพื้นที่เพาะปลูกและที่ว่างเปล่า สามารถเจริญเติบโตได้ในหลายสภาพ มักพบขึ้นในชุ่มชื้น ในประเทศไทยพบตามคันนา แหล่งน้ำข้างทาง หนองน้ำทั่วไป และเป็นวัชพืชในพืชปลูกที่ปลูกในพื้นที่นาหลังเก็บเกี่ยวข้าวแล้ว

วิธีการควบคุม (Control measure)

ควบคุมผักเป็ดน้ำ โดยการถอนออกไม่สามารถควบคุมวัชพืชอายุหลายฤดู ใช้สารกำจัดวัชพืช เช่น amitrole แล้วพ่นซ้ำด้วย 2,4-D and MCPA ได้ผลปานกลาง มีรายงานว่า ผักกาดน้ำ ผักเป็ดน้ำอ่อนแอต่อ bensulfuron, 2,4-D, MCPA, oxadiazon, propanil และ butachlor
