แพร่ระบาดไปกับหัวมันฝรั่งเป็นโรค เชื้อถ่ายทอดได้ดีจากต้นเป็นโรคลงสู่หัวมันฝรั่งในปี พ.ศ. 2528 พบเชื้อ Potato virus S ติดเข้ามากับหัวมันฝรั่งพันธุ์ Russet Burbank ที่สั่งเข้ามาเพื่อส่งเสริมให้เกษตรกรปลูกเพื่อการผลิตพันธุ์และป้อนโรงงาน
